Horse Hair Jewellery from Tail End Jewellery

'The Tale Behind' is a place for you to tell us the story behind the special piece of jewellery that we made for you. We hope that this will enable you to share with us all, the special bond that you and your horse share, whether they are still part of your life or not.

If you wish to feature in this section then just send us your story (and a photo or two would be great!) and those picked will receive a £10 Gift Voucher to use on our website. A new story will be chosen and posted every few weeks so keep popping back to read them!

I will start with my story of Gold:

Carrick
I first met Carrick when we were both twelve years old. From the moment I set eyes on him, I knew he was the one. His kind eyes and cheeky character made me fall in love with him instantly, and I felt so lucky to have him in my life. We would gallop around the fields and the woods, jumping tree trunks and hacking with friends. Go to local shows and hunter trials where he would be a complete show off and win everything! When I think back to those days, all my memories seem to be of warm, sunny days with the smell of fly spray in the air. ...
Dancer
Dancer came to us in 2016 as a 16 year old. She taught my daughter Lois how to jump at speed. We had until this point had show ponies, so Dancer was a new venture. After starting my daughter jumping at 50cm and winning we increased the height to 60-70. This was the height the pony's ability was sold at (70cm). after winning many red rosettes at 70 we moved onto 80. At 80 saw many more red rosettes and they started to ride for Chipstead Riding Club in team competitions. 2017 saw 5 championship shows and many many more wins. Win af...
Silver Cloud
Silver came into my life just before I turned 20, with everyone telling me not to buy a horse. I'd recently overcome my fear of horses and had been working with them for nearly a year when my precious boy came into my life as a rising 4 year old.  We shared many memories and he beacame my entire world, I would do anything needed to make his life the best it could be. He taught me many things and would often listen to me blubbering on his chest and have his special way of letting me know everything would be ok. He was a show off ...
Perriwinkle-Blue
I just wanted to let you know how pleased I am with the bracelet you made for my dearly missed Perri. It's absolutely perfect and a lovely thing to keep close to me. I very sadly had him put to sleep last month at only 8 years old. I had owned him from a 2 year old and he was such a fun and happy horse. Sadly an injury to his fetlock, that we couldn't fix or manage the pain, meant we had to say goodbye far too soon.  Byrony, July 2018
Mags
Magnum Vieux Moulin or Mags came from Samur in France and was a Selle Francaise Sport Horse. He was by Cabdula Du Tillard who was by Abdullah out of a Voltaire mare Eisther Du Village. The kindest horse I ever met and who tolerated my amateur capabilities - but could also be a complete diva at shows and then jump the most incredible round. He was a showjumper that could do a lovely dressage test and turned his hoof to eventing too. A genuine alrounder. He gave me the courage to try again and fulfill some childhood and adult ambit...
Rotherwood Maybe
I began riding at the age of three and competed at HOYS and Royal International every year between 200 and 2007 – when I retired from the ring. I was lucky to have some amazing ponies during that time but my pony of a lifetime is Rotherwood Maybe, a 143cm show hunter pony. She was certainly the most challenging pony we had ever had but when I did finally start to win classes with her, it made it all the more special. Rotherwood Maybe – a stable name Maybe or Moose, is by Strinsdale Matador out of the beautiful Chirk Wind Flow...
Zeb
They say you have one horse in a lifetime, and this is so true when it comes to my Belgium Warmblood - Zeb. Having ridden throughout my childhood and into my teens, I took a break from horse riding but came back to it when I was in my early thirties. Zeb literally fell in my lap. He was certainly not a horse I would search to buy. He was coming up nine and a huge 17.2 hands with the longest back you have ever seen! With me being 5ft 5 and not blessed with long legs, it was certainly not a perfect match in stature.  He really gave me...
Emma
Emma aka "Running Riot" was truly a horse of a lifetime and we had the pleasure of owning her for the last 20 years of her life. She was a beautiful Irish Draft with a heart of gold and a pure talent for showjumping. At 15.2hh she managed to out jump many of her larger competitors to win numerous events, even coming second in fox hunter and winning puissance. When she first got off the lorry she would get looks to say "what's she doing in this class!" but as soon as she got in the ring she would prove exactly why she ...
Rachel&Bee
I knew I wanted to honour my horse "Bee" with a piece of jewellery from Tail End Jewellery, after I bought a beautiful necklace for my friend who lost her horse a few years ago. I just didn't realise I would be ordering it so soon. I bought Bee as a barely broken 3 -year old. When I went to look at her, I told myself I didn't want a mare, and I certainly didn't want a grey. However, in a quiet moment together in the stable, when I scratched her withers and she bent her head around and nibbled my elbow, I knew I was ...
Perri&Vinni
In May this year I lost my two amazing boys. Perri I had owned from a three year old, he was the horse of a lifetime. He was 19, taught me lots and was successful at dressage, which amazed people, being a Clydesdale cross! Vinni was an 8 year old with lots of problems. He didn't trust humans, it took him many years for him to trust me! We had lots of fun over the years and I even brought him back from Laminitis.  They were the best of friends and had amazing manners. I miss them every day but love my amazing necklace mad...
Barney
Wolds Barn Owl aka Barney was a Fell Pony. I had owned him from a cheeky 6 year old until September when we had to say a very sad farewell. He had suffered the dreaded laminitis on and off and had rotation November 2017, so this claimed him in the end. He reached 19 years old in July. Barney was my rock, my best friend, my everything. We had such a wonderful bond. He got me through the hardest times in my life, and I through his. The loss of my wonderful dad being the hardest for me and Barney was the one I turned to. He lifted my spirit...
Merlin&Gee
After years of riding my friends naughty ponies my parents finally gave into my nagging and bought me Merlin (left hand side) then 14, to learn how to ride properly. We had a great time competing until adult life took over (as it does!) and so he started working in the riding school where I learned to ride many moon ago. He loved his work, especially bucking people off after jumping! He retired to the field at the grand old age of 30 and taught over 100 people to ride, and also how to sit to a big buck! Gee aka Minni Mr Bigglesworth (rig...
Hamish
I met Hamish whilst working as a groom on a livery and eventing yard. He belonged to my boss and close friend, Sorrel. Sorrel had bought Hamish from Joe Meyer where he was competing at 4*. He had completed Badminton and Burghley, placing 19th and 20th as well as countless other 3* events.  Sorrel bought Hamish with the intention of rehabilitating him from a recent injury. Once he was sound she had fantastic seasons eventing him up to 1*. Sadly, at an event, Hamish pulled up lame and had to go through platelet therapy and more rehabi...
Jo&Lady
I will never forget the first day I met you. Stood in a barn, as I apporached, you turned to me and the most beautiful deep brown eyes looked back at me. I was in love with you immediately! I had got my dream beautiful bay horse called Lady. You were 7 then, you had a strong personality but a deeply kind nature. I had no idea how to look after a horse but I soon learnt. You gave me so much joy, we got to know each other and a strong bond was developed between us. A few months later you suprised me with a foal, Phoebe, another new learnin...
Gold
When you have spent half your life with someone or something they leave a big hole in your heart when they go. I started looking after Gold when I was 16 years old and at the age of 21 I was generously gifted him. When I met him he was a gangly 4 year old 13.3hh Palomino Welsh cross pony and the sort of pony I had been dreaming about and begging my parents for the previous 10 years of my life! We rode miles together round the countryside just the 2 of us. Got bathed and dressed up to hack to the local shows and shared many a hour just ch...
